Sadly the direction of this film feels rather anonymous, and Sergio Leone doesn't seem to have a unique vision in this film. Though like A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More , it is not an ambitious work and instead just plays with popular conventions of Italian genre cinema.
The Colossus of Rhodes does make sense as a learning…. Set in BC, during the void years after the days of Alexander the Great but before the advent of Roman Empire, The Colossus of Rhodes Il Colosso di Rodi follows a Greek military hero who visits his uncle on the island of Rhodes to enjoy his vacation but inadvertently finds himself involved in two different plots to overthrow the tyrannical king.
His first credited work as a director, too. I was beginning to wonder how he'd been given the opportunity to make such lavish sword and sandal epics considering a.

There is some fun stuff though, including a pretty cool chase up, out and over the top of the titular Colossus, and some other nice fights and duels distributed throughout. One aspect of the Leone touch that I think can be seen is his knack for patiently tracing through a scene without much of a desire for quickness, although what would later become tense and…. Sergio Leone's official directorial debut, but it's not that much different from his unofficial debut The Last Days of Pompeii. It's a little bit better, but not by much.
I don't know, the sword and sandal genre is kind of like the sock and sandal combo; some people love it, but I struggle to understand why. It doesn't look good. I do see how the genre informed parts of Leone' spaghetti westerns though, but the visual language, style and suspense wasn't quite there yet.
A slow start, but the rest of Leone's career would prove to be iconic once the training wheels were off.
